Summary

Savannah-Chatham E-Learning Academy is an alternative public school serving grades 1-12 in Savannah, Georgia, part of the Savannah-Chatham County school district. With 493 students, the school offers an e-learning curriculum and has maintained relatively high 4-year graduation rates, ranging from 84.4% to 89.1% over the past few years, outperforming the district and state averages. However, the school's test scores on the Milestones Assessments are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all subjects and grade levels, with only 21.9% of students proficient or better in American Literature and Composition, compared to 28.4% in the district and 40.4% statewide.

Savannah-Chatham E-Learning Academy has a very high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 61.45% to 80.73% over the past few years, much higher than the district average. The school's student-teacher ratio has improved over the past few years, going from 21.2 in 2021-2022 to 11.9 in 2023-2024, a positive trend that can benefit student learning. Interestingly, the two nearby schools in the same district, School of Humanities at Juliette Gordon Low and Union High School of Savannah Coastal Harbor Treatment Center, have similar demographic and performance characteristics to Savannah-Chatham E-Learning Academy.

Despite the school's low test scores, Savannah-Chatham E-Learning Academy has maintained relatively high graduation rates, suggesting it may be effective in supporting students to complete their high school education. However, the school's test scores have declined over the past few years, with proficiency rates dropping across most subjects and grade levels, a concerning trend that warrants further investigation. With its high percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, the school likely receives additional funding and resources, but the low test scores suggest these resources may not be effectively utilized to improve academic outcomes.

Open Quote For the 1st few years, as long as a student was getting As & Bs, they could work independently. Since my child has ASD, working at her own pace is what she needs. She actually worked faster & was always getting As & Bs. Then for the 22-23 school year, she was forced to attend all classes regardless of grades. What made it an issue is she was completing her work faster than everyone else, so she'd sit with nothing to do and one teacher, who taught 2 of her classes, complained to me about her reading a book/not paying attention. I've watched many zooms, 90 of them are teachers yelling at students. So I told my kid to just do the next days work. Then the teacher started marking her absent for days where she had no work to do but was still in the zoom. Who marks a kid absent for finishing their work too fast? That teacher also didn't care about the special accommodations needed for a child with ASD, which is an ADA-protected disability. Close Quote
