Summary

Sweetwater Elementary School in Port Orange, FL, is a top-performing public school serving 617 students in grades PK through 5 within the Volusia district, consistently earning a 5-star rating and ranking in the top 5-8% of all elementary schools in Florida for the past decade.

Sweetwater stands out for its exceptional academic proficiency, with math scores reaching 90-91% and English Language Arts scores hitting 85-88% in 3rd and 4th grades—roughly 25-30 percentage points above state averages. Its 5th-grade science proficiency of 85% is also 25 points higher than the state average. The school also boasts a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of just 13.2%, less than half the district average of 34.1%. While nearby Cypress Creek Elementary is a strong 4-star school with similar demographics, Sweetwater’s performance is in a different tier, ranking 85th out of 2,240 schools statewide compared to Cypress Creek’s 358th place. Other nearby schools like South Daytona Elementary and Sugar Mill Elementary trail significantly in both ranking and test scores.

One interesting finding is a consistent dip in 5th-grade English Language Arts scores (73% in 2025-2026) compared to earlier grades, though still well above state averages. Additionally, Sweetwater’s per-student spending of $11,178 is lower than some peers like Spruce Creek Elementary ($12,401) and Horizon Elementary ($12,301), suggesting its success is driven more by high family engagement, strong attendance, and effective instruction than by higher funding. With only 31.93% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, Sweetwater serves a relatively affluent community, creating a supportive environment where academic focus thrives.

Open Quote This is by far the best elementary school in Volusia County. Mrs. Miller has been so outstanding as the principal of this school. She has put together a team of teachers and staff that really love the kids and their jobs. I couldn't be any happier having my children there. I moved to my house specifically to be zoned for this school. Close Quote
