Summary

Campbell Middle School in Daytona Beach, FL, serves 962 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Volusia school district, with a very high rate of economic disadvantage—84.1% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school faces significant challenges, most notably a severe chronic absenteeism crisis. In the 2023-2024 school year, 46.1% of students were chronically absent, which is 12.4 percentage points higher than the next closest school (New Smyrna Beach Middle School at 35.8%) and nearly double the rate of Creekside Middle School (25.2%). Academically, Campbell is a low-performing school with a 1-star rating for the last ten consecutive years, and proficiency in core subjects like English Language Arts and Science is well below district and state averages. However, there is a striking exception: the school is a top performer in advanced math courses. In the 2023-2024 school year, Campbell achieved an 83% proficiency rate in Algebra 1 and a remarkable 92% in Geometry, far exceeding all nearby schools. This creates a "tale of two schools" where advanced students thrive while the majority struggle.

Despite spending more per student ($9,472) than any nearby competitor, the school has the highest student-to-teacher ratio (23.1:1) among its peers, suggesting larger class sizes. The primary issue appears to be a need for a comprehensive strategy to improve attendance and provide effective foundational instruction for all students, not just those in the accelerated track. There is a glimmer of hope in math, with 6th-grade proficiency rising from 24% in 2022-2023 to 47% in the most recent data, indicating that targeted interventions may be starting to work.

Open Quote The percentages are nowhere near correct in demographics. This is 90 African American, 9 Other, and 1 White. That's the reality. It's a Juvenile Detention Center cleverly named a middle school. It's a gladiator camp. That's the reality. There are fights, drugs, alcohol, thugs, gangs, and tremendous violence there. There's a reason NOT A SINGLE truancy officer ever takes a parent to court in Volusia County. The schools are unimaginably horrible in Daytona Beach, FL, and you will never get a variance, because they have to keep feeding new gladiators to these children grinding machines called schools. Move ANYWHERE ELSE Ormond, Port Orange, New Smyrna, Deland, but DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT move your family to Daytona Beach. Campbell Middle School is one of the worst schools in the entire nation. Open Quote This school is terrible. The teachers don't care for you child, especially if the skin color isn't of the majority that attend it. This school makes me sick. Absolutely the worst public school I have ever had to deal with! I would rather drive my kids every morning to another school. Daytona Beach would be much better off if they closed Campbell and used the money elsewhere. Close Quote
