Summary

Palmetto Elementary School is a PK-5 public school in Palmetto, FL, serving 519 students within the Manatee County School District, where over 75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

This school is in the midst of a notable academic turnaround, particularly in math. After years of ranking in the bottom half of Florida elementary schools, Palmetto Elementary has achieved its highest state ranking in a decade, reaching the 34th percentile. The standout strength is upper-grade math: 5th graders scored 69% proficient in 2025-2026, outperforming the district (61%) and state (62%), and 4th graders hit 67% proficiency, also beating district and state averages. This math success is consistent over recent years, suggesting a targeted and effective math program. However, English Language Arts (ELA) scores remain a persistent weakness, with all grades falling below district and state averages—for example, 3rd-grade ELA at 40% is 20 points behind the state. This creates a "two halves" school: a math powerhouse in upper grades and a struggling literacy program across all grades.

Compared to nearby schools, Palmetto Elementary stands out for its dramatic improvement and relatively low chronic absenteeism rate of 22.5%, which is far better than peers like G D Rogers Garden- Bullock Elementary (39.7%) and Manatee Elementary (39.1%). Just 0.36 miles away, Palmetto Charter School is a 5-star school in the 93rd percentile with proficiency rates in the 70-90% range, but it serves a much less impoverished population (33.62% free/reduced lunch). This proximity highlights the challenges Palmetto Elementary faces in overcoming the impacts of high poverty. The school's per-student spending ($15,274) is average for the area, so the key is reallocating resources to replicate its math success in literacy, especially in early grades.

Open Quote It's no wonder that this school was ranked below almost 80 of Florida's elementary schools because they would rather have your child sent home for playing with their earrings then allow them to get their education. They violate on a regular basis the policies and procedures outlined by the school board and in their own handbook when it comes to discipline as long as it fits their needs. My child's first referral had a specific list of available consequences and the consequence he received was 2 days out of school suspension, on his very first referral. The worst punishment applicable for this referral was in school suspension. Worst school ever Close Quote
