Summary

Pepin Academies in Tampa, FL, is an alternative school serving 834 students in grades 3 through 12 within the Hillsborough school district, and it stands out for its remarkable ability to graduate students despite facing significant academic and attendance challenges.

The most defining feature of Pepin Academies is its "graduation paradox." The school boasts a five-year average graduation rate of 94.6%, which is significantly higher than the district (88.4%) and state (89.5%) averages. This is a standout achievement compared to other alternative schools in the area, such as Caminiti Exceptional Center (63.6%) and Medical Academy At D.W. Waters (10.5%). However, this high graduation rate comes alongside very low standardized test scores—for example, only 12% of students were proficient in Algebra 1 and 16% in 10th-grade ELA, compared to 63% and 60% district-wide. This suggests the school prioritizes student retention, credit recovery, and social-emotional support over test preparation, making it a "graduation factory" for students who have struggled in traditional settings.

Pepin also faces a high chronic absenteeism rate of 43.9%, though this is lower than many comparable schools like Florida Autism Charter School Of Excellence (52.0%) and Idea Victory (45%). Its student-teacher ratio of 13.4:1 is favorable compared to traditional schools, and its per-student spending of $16,181 is moderate for an alternative school. When compared to Hillsborough Virtual School, which has a 98.5% graduation rate and 0% absenteeism, Pepin serves a very different population—students who need intensive, in-person support to reach the finish line of a diploma. For parents, Pepin Academies offers a clear value: a dedicated environment focused on helping students graduate, even if academic proficiency as measured by state tests lags behind.

Open Quote Most of the classes were too easy. They did not offer calc precalc a full course in trigonometry or calc. There was no dual enrollment or advanced placement students are not being prepared for college. Most of the students who go to college after graduating from pepin are encouraged to go to community college. Close Quote

Open Quote I have attended the Pepin Academies of Tampa for approximately four years. The teachers and instructors are typically very spontaneous and appear to enjoy their occupation. They are also very encouraging and do expect the best out of each and every one of their pupils. One the other hand, my one and only complaint against them is how they keep the room temperature. I have a condition which prompts me to break out in hives in cold air or water. Almost all of the classrooms I walk into makes me feel as if I were walking into a Costco freezer. I feel that 68 degrees is an inappropriate temperature for me to stay in for nearly an hour: even with a jacket or long pants on. Unless it would be dreadfully hot and humid outside, temperatures in the cubicles should not be below 80 degrees.
In addition, the apparent reason as to why I've given this institution a low rating is because of the conduct of the fellow students. I understand that everybody in this place has some sort of issue or disability of their own, but they act as if they have senses of entitlement because of it. They act as if they can have higher authority than the adults. Occasionally (but not always), I will hear of individuals engaging in fights with the instructors and will storm out of the classroom in a rage, throw things, or even shout and talk back. The same goes with other kids: a child with anger management problems could tell another child to 'shut up' and if told to do the same, they could get physically and verbally violent. I feel as if Florida may as well legalize corporal punishment in all schools again in order to keep the people in line. It's gotten so uncomfortable that I don't even want to be around my peers or even be friends with them at all. This is my last year in high school and I have four more months until I graduate, but I don't know how much longer I can take it being around people who are 19 or so but act like 10 year olds. I really look up to the administration and the staff of this school, but something has to be done about the behaviors and attitudes about the students. Close Quote
