Summary

Howard D. McMillan Middle School is a public middle school in Miami, FL, serving 957 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Miami-Dade district, which holds a solid 4-star rating.

McMillan is a school of stark contrasts, excelling in advanced coursework while facing a significant challenge in grade-level math. The school is a powerhouse for students in advanced academic tracks, with near-perfect proficiency rates on End-of-Course (EOC) exams: 97% in Algebra 1, 95% in Geometry, and 100% in Biology 1. These scores are dramatically higher than district and state averages, making it a top destination for gifted learners. However, only 38% of 8th graders were proficient in the grade-level FAST Math exam, a staggering 27 points below the district average. This gap is especially notable when compared to nearby Academir Charter School Middle, which serves a similar area but achieves 76% proficiency in 8th-grade math. On a positive note, McMillan has a low chronic absenteeism rate of 18.1%, significantly better than the district (28.2%) and state (31.4%) averages, indicating a healthy school climate.

Despite spending $13,221 per student—higher than several higher-performing nearby schools like Arvida Middle School ($9,927 per student) and Somerset Academy Bay Middle School ($9,257 per student)—McMillan’s overall state ranking (61st percentile) lags behind these peers. This suggests a need to reallocate resources to support on-level students, particularly in 8th-grade math. The school’s primary challenge is to replicate the success of its advanced programs for all students, ensuring it is not just a great school for some, but a great school for everyone.

Open Quote I have two kids that attend this school and I have only good things to say overall. The teachers are very dedicated and experienced. They are great and taught my boys so very much. The administration is wonderful and open to having meetings if problems ever arises. There are many opportunities to be involved as a student and parent. The robotics program is great and has the Cambridge name to back it up. There are problems of course as in any school but talk to the teachers or go to the office and they will direct you to the help you need. Close Quote

Open Quote This is a good school. Like anything, it can become better. Parents need to be more involved but the administration needs to do much more to bring in those parents in. Suggestions have been made over & over but no effort by administration ( only excuses ). The number of students have gone down. Teachers are very nice and do help the kids that want to be helped. So much they can do. In general, the Principal has the final word and sometimes she does not interact with the parents. The staff in the office has improved, finally got rid of wasted employees that did nothing other then being rude. Put that money into the kids. Close Quote
