Summary

Nestor Language Academy Charter is a large, K-8 charter school serving 1,079 students in San Diego's South Bay Union district, standing out as a consistently above-average performer within a lower-performing area.

The school excels in several key areas compared to its neighbors, with significantly higher test scores in English, math, and science, and a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 14.1%—far better than the district and nearby schools like Oneonta Elementary or Emory Elementary. It is particularly effective for English Language Learners and students from low-income families, earning 4-star ratings for these groups. As a language academy, its students also show strong Spanish proficiency, more than doubling the state average.

While Nestor is a top performer in its home district, a comparison with Silver Wing Elementary in the higher-ranked Chula Vista Elementary district shows that broader district support can impact outcomes. Nonetheless, Nestor's specialized language program, strong post-pandemic recovery, and consistent results make it a notable success story and a compelling option for families in the South Bay area.

Open Quote Your ranking appears to be based on misleading information. The students at Nestor are learning all their school subjects in two languages so in 2nd grade, when California used to administer the first State tests, Nestor students were taking a test in a language they had not yet studied. By the time they reach 5th grade the children from English-speaking families are quite fluent in Spanish and their friends from Spanish-speaking families are quite fluent in English. That's when their scores on State tests show the benefit of biliteracy. Those tests are being revised for the Common Core so there are no scores to compare right now. However, simple test scores are not enough to call a school good or bad. I have visited Nestor several times in the past year (my child is now grown) and I can attest to the amazing instruction happening in the classroom in both languages. Close Quote
