Summary

Salmon Bay K-8 School is a consistently strong public school serving about 595 students from kindergarten through 8th grade in Seattle's Seattle School District No. 1, known for its unique K-8 structure and steady academic performance in the 85th-90th percentile range statewide over the last five years.

The school has particular areas of excellence, most notably in science where student proficiency significantly outpaces both district and state averages, and in its exceptionally effective support for special education students, ranking in the 98th percentile statewide for that subgroup. While its overall ranking is slightly lower than some nearby high-performing elementary schools like West Woodland Elementary or Greenwood Elementary, it's important to note Salmon Bay serves middle school grades, which presents different challenges than a K-5 model. The school achieves these strong results efficiently, operating with a higher student-teacher ratio and lower per-student spending than several comparison schools.

An interesting comparison is with Licton Springs K-8, the only other local K-8 school, where Salmon Bay achieves significantly stronger academic outcomes despite lower per-student funding. The school has shown a remarkable decade-long improvement trajectory and demonstrates notable consistency in its performance year-to-year compared to some neighboring schools that show more volatility.

Open Quote Very underperforming school. Test scores, especially in math, are mostly buoyed by parent paid tutors. Very non diverse school, almost all white and upper income. When you tour be sure to note that many of the alternate offerings are parent paid for and do not involve much staff. This would include the ski and snow board program and the camping experiences in the lower grade. Close Quote

Open Quote Salmon Bay School has excellent faculty who who expect a lot of students and also work hard and care a lot. The school has good academics and also provides art, PE (every day!!), drama, music, camp. etc. There is a lot of family involvement. It is a good school if your student has good self-motivation. Open Quote My son attended middle school at Salmon Bay. He had a very difficult time his first few months due to emotional bullying. Staff and management supported my son, resolved the issue and went on to create a fantastic learning situation for him. He was accepted into a very rigorous high school situation due to the fine educational experience he got at Salmon Bay. P.S. he participated in sports and loved it. The coaches are the BEST.
