Summary

International Community School is a small, top-ranked public school serving grades 6-12 in Kirkland, WA, with just over 400 students in the highly-regarded Lake Washington School District.

This school stands out for its exceptional and consistent academic performance, currently ranking 3rd out of all high schools in Washington. Student proficiency rates are remarkably high, exceeding 85% in every core subject and far outpacing both district and state averages. Unlike larger comprehensive high schools in the area, such as Lake Washington High School or Juanita High School, ICS maintains a much smaller student body, which may contribute to its focused academic environment. It has also demonstrated a strong record of success across different student subgroups, showing high achievement for all genders.

When compared to nearby schools, including those in the Bellevue School District like Bellevue High School, ICS serves a student population with a very low rate of economic disadvantage. The school's performance stability is notable; while rankings for other high-performing schools can fluctuate, ICS has remained a top-tier school for over a decade. Its model suggests that a combination of small size, specialized academic focus, and consistent educational practices contributes to its outstanding results, even within an already high-achieving regional context.

Open Quote This is an excellent school for the right child. My son has been very happy at the school, but he's also an enthusiastic learner on his own. I find he biggest draw back is Focus Week. This should be an opportunity for all grades to travel outside the country. There should be a trip to Spain every year for the students, especially since they begin Spanish in 7th grade, and it's a core focus. Parents should understand that the school is not STEM focused (and should not become STEM focused). It provides excellent critical thinking skills. Close Quote

Open Quote It is concerning how many students leave ICS and go to their regular highs school.

There are WAAAAy too many parents trying to force the school to become a stem focused school as they think it is the only way their superstar will get into Stanford. It's sad how many students feel the pressure to live up to their parents' unrealists expectations. ICS is NOT a STEM school! It is a liberal arts focused school.

The homework load is unrelenting. It wouldn't be so laborious if the homework was actually engaging, but my classmates and I find the homework to be timewasting busy work. There are a ton of outside of school projects and many classmates are surprisingly immature and either cancel at the last minute or don't show up to agreed upon group project meetings on weekends. One or two people usually end up doing 90 of the group project work. When responsible students bring it to teachers' attention, the teachers shrug it off, "talk" to the offenders but give the non-contributing members the same grade as those students who actually did the work!

Please don't celebrate that your children "won the lottery" and got into ICS. There is so much wrong with the school and how it negativity impacts the only childrehood/teen years your child with get in her/his life. Let your kid be a kid. Say NO to ICS! Close Quote
