Summary

Sunray Elementary is a small, rural PK-5 school in Sunray, TX, serving 256 students within the Sunray Collegiate Independent School District (Isd). After a sharp decline to the 25th percentile in the 2024-2025 school year, the school has rebounded significantly to the 51st percentile (3 stars) for the 2025-2026 year, a gain of 26 percentile points. This recovery is a key differentiator from nearby schools: while Dumas North Elementary remains a high-performer but has a slightly downward trajectory, and Cactus Elementary is in a state of crisis in the bottom 14% of Texas schools, Sunray has managed to pull itself out of a similar tailspin.

Sunray’s recent test scores show a clear strength in early literacy. In 3rd grade reading, Sunray scored 64.71% proficient, significantly outperforming Dumas South Elementary (54.46%) and Cactus (28.41%), and nearly matching Dumas North (73.4%). The school effectively doubled its 4th-grade reading proficiency in one year, from 29.73% to 63.64%. However, mathematics remains a persistent weakness: 4th-grade math proficiency is only 27.27%, dramatically lower than Dumas North (73.23%) and Dumas South (58.39%). Science scores are also alarmingly low, with 5th-grade science proficiency dropping to just 6.98% in the most recent year, suggesting science instruction has been neglected.

The school shows volatility in supporting its most vulnerable students. Low socioeconomic status (SES) students dropped from the 66th percentile to the 30th percentile over three years, while at-risk students fell from the 78th percentile to the 60th percentile. Interestingly, the school’s overall rebound may be driven by improvements for some subgroups, while others are being left behind. Sunray’s lower poverty rate (54.3% free/reduced lunch) compared to Cactus (94.05%) is an advantage, but the school is not consistently leveraging it for its most disadvantaged learners. The primary challenge for the administration will be to determine if the 2025-2026 rebound is sustainable and to urgently address the glaring weaknesses in math and science.
