Summary

Memorial High School in Houston, TX, is a large, high-performing public high school in the Spring Branch Independent School District (Isd), serving over 2,600 students in grades 9-12 and consistently earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for six consecutive years. The school stands out for its exceptional academic performance, with proficiency rates in core subjects like Biology (87.93%), English II (88.69%), and U.S. History (89.02%) that are dramatically higher than nearby comprehensive schools such as Northbrook High School and Spring Woods High School, which often struggle to reach even 50% proficiency. Memorial also boasts a high graduation rate (95.3%) and a very low dropout rate (0.8%), significantly outperforming its district peers.

One interesting finding is the "Algebra I Anomaly," where only 47.83% of Memorial students were proficient in Algebra I, below both the district and state averages, despite stellar performance in other math-related subjects like Biology. This contrasts sharply with Westchester Academy For International Studies, a magnet school just 3.6 miles away that serves a more economically diverse student body but achieves even higher test scores in nearly every subject, including a 96.91% proficiency in Biology and a perfect 100% graduation rate. This comparison highlights how a specialized, selective magnet program can achieve extraordinary results, even when serving a higher percentage of low-income students, raising questions about the effectiveness of Memorial's large, comprehensive model.

Memorial also demonstrates notable efficiency, spending less per student ($9,194) than any of its nearby peers, such as Wisdom High School ($11,510) and Scarborough High School ($11,221), while achieving top-tier results. However, there are equity gaps in subgroup performance, with African American students ranking in the 45th percentile in 2025-2026, a significant drop from the 70th percentile the prior year, indicating a systemic challenge in ensuring equitable outcomes for all students. For parents, Memorial offers a strong academic environment with high graduation rates and efficient spending, but it's important to consider the Algebra I performance and the varying experiences of different student groups when evaluating the school.

Open Quote It's amazing...idk, its really vigorous academic wise. Offers a lot of afterschool activities and extracurriculars. Teachers (most of them) are nice and sometimes lenient. All sports except girls volleyball sucks. Football is dead in this school, don't come for that. Um yeah...I HATE SCHOOL, but only because they're preparing me for college and the STRESS, kill me but yeah overall most of the time its pretty good. Close Quote
