Summary

Myrtle Cooper Elementary is a PK-5 school in the Socorro Independent School District (Isd) in El Paso, TX, serving 550 students and holding a strong 4-star rating after a remarkable recovery from pandemic-era lows. The school stands out for its exceptional performance with Hispanic and low socio-economic status students, ranking in the 79th and 77th percentiles respectively—higher than its overall 72nd percentile rank. This is a key differentiator from nearby schools like Loma Verde, which achieves higher overall scores but doesn't match this targeted success with vulnerable populations. However, a significant gender gap exists, with male students ranking in the 78th percentile while female students rank in the 60th percentile, an 18-point gap not seen at nearby O'Shea Keleher Whole Child Academy.

The school's most critical weakness is serving special education students, who ranked in the 40th percentile in 2025-2026—a major improvement from the 6th percentile in 2023-2024 but still a persistent challenge. No other nearby school, such as Vista Del Sol Environmental Science or Tierra Del Sol Elementary, shows such dramatic underperformance for this subgroup. In contrast, 5th-grade math is a clear strength, with 62.82% of students proficient in 2025-2026, significantly outpacing the district (56.26%) and state (47.38%), while 3rd-grade math lags at 40% proficiency. Science remains a consistent challenge, with only 23.29% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025, below district and state averages.

Myrtle Cooper's journey from the 31st percentile in 2020-2021 back to the 72nd percentile in 2025-2026 is a compelling story of resilience, especially compared to Vista Del Sol Environmental Science, which dropped from the 68th to the 43rd percentile in the same period. The school's per-student spending ($10,895) is higher than John Drugan School ($9,386) but lower than Tierra Del Sol Elementary ($12,381), suggesting that instructional strategies and leadership, not just funding, drive its strong recovery and subgroup performance. For parents, this school offers a dedicated environment that excels with many students but requires attention for special education support and the gender performance gap.

Open Quote I have two student enrolled in this school and I am so disappointed with the secretaries in the office. They are very unorganized, I have been waiting for them to update the enrollment cards for my kids for years now. I have sent in more then enough copies of my utility bill and they still have all my old information. The teachers are very nice though my kids are very happy in this school. I just wish the office was more organized. Close Quote
