Summary

Sierra Vista Steam Academy is a PK-5 elementary school in El Paso, TX, serving 622 students within the Socorro Independent School District (Isd). This school has achieved a remarkable turnaround, rising from the 29th percentile statewide in 2021 to its highest-ever ranking at the 75th percentile in the 2025-2026 school year, earning a 4-star rating for three of the last four years.

The school's greatest strength is its exceptional performance with students from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking in the 87th percentile for this group—12 points higher than its overall rank. This is particularly impressive given that over 72% of students qualify for this support. Sierra Vista also excels with its Hispanic and English Language Learner students, both ranking in the 81st percentile. True to its "Steam Academy" name, the school consistently outperforms the district and state in 5th Grade Science. A fascinating pattern emerges in math, where 4th-grade proficiency has been significantly higher than 3rd-grade for three consecutive years, suggesting a highly effective math program or intervention strategy after 3rd grade.

When compared to nearby schools, Sierra Vista shows interesting contrasts. While Loma Verde (ranked 93rd percentile) outperforms it overall, Sierra Vista outperforms the higher-ranked John Drugan School (85th percentile) in 4th-grade math (67.78% vs. 60%) and does a better job serving its low-income students despite having a higher percentage of such students (72.67% vs. 58.79%). However, the school's Gifted and Talented program ranks in the 16th percentile, indicating a need to better challenge its highest-achieving students. With per-student spending of $10,726, Sierra Vista appears to use its resources effectively to drive achievement, making it a high-value option in the district.

Open Quote Update on this school. My son went to this school as an overflow, we belong to John Drugan but he requested to stay on this school the following school year. My request for transfer to this school was approved. He is very happy and enjoys going to school and has good grades. I can't ask for more. I am grateful for him to be able to go to this school. l I volunteer in the school when I can. They welcome parents, not like other schools this schools encourages parents participation which I really like. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is not a safe environment for our children. They say they will have monitors outside and inside guiding our children to their classrooms and it's been 3 days with no monitors outside or in. They only had monitors the first day of school which is useless since they let parents walk the kids into the classroom. If they're not going to put monitors they should at least let parents walk the kids to their classroom. I called twice to complain about the whole no monitor situation and they just do not care! If there is no adult supervision how do I know my child isn't getting pushed around, laughed at, or other things (bullying) by the older kids on her way to class?! Everyday I drop her off I get more and more concerned about her safety. How do I even know if she gets to class? I DO NOT LIKE THIS SCHOOL AT ALL!! As soon as I can I'm transferring her out of there!! Very disappointed!! And it's only been the first week of school, I can only imagine what will happen in the future as long as my kid is there.
