Summary

Travis Early College High School in San Antonio, TX, is a small school serving 408 students in grades 9-12 within the San Antonio Independent School District (Isd), and it stands out as a top-performing school in a district that ranks in the bottom 20% of Texas.

This school is a true "pocket of excellence," consistently earning a 5-star rating and ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide. Its academic performance is dramatically higher than the district average, with proficiency rates in English I & II Reading (81.8% and 89.8%) and U.S. History (95.1%) that are more than double the district's averages. The school also boasts a perfect 100% graduation rate and a 0.0% dropout rate for the last several years. What makes this even more impressive is that over 68% of students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, yet the school achieves outcomes that rival those in much wealthier areas. The Early College model, which allows students to earn college credit, is a clear driver of this success, keeping students engaged and on track.

Interestingly, Travis shares a campus with Fox Technical High School (59th percentile) and Cast Technical High School (74th percentile), yet its outcomes are vastly superior, proving that the school's culture and program are the key factors. The school excels with all student groups, including Hispanic students (95th percentile) and English Language Learners (92nd percentile). The only area for growth is with Gifted and Talented students, who rank in the 53rd percentile, suggesting the school may need to provide more enrichment for its highest achievers.

Open Quote This school is like nothing else in saisd. here we are offered the most for the talents that we have rather than in a traditional school. i'd rather be two years ahead of the rest of the 2012 class than have the traditional school setting. overall this school is ahead of every other school for only being up for 3 years. Open Quote Despite all of the hype that is available, this school is not all that it's cracked up to be. The school is going on it's fourth year and, being with the school the entire time, I can honestly say that there are too many problems. For starters, each new class that is being accepted seems to be going through a less strenuous selection than the prior. Because of the lower classes the students of Travis have already been banned from several local shops, reprimanded by the college, and even kicked out of San Pedro Park! And while the teachers are fantastic, the administrative staff is lacking. (We are on principal AND counselor number three already). Several times when I have personally gone to ask for help, they have been too busy to even acknowledge a concern about my registered courses at SAC - or, even worse, I have found out about my classes the day of (or after) their actual start time. Generally the students are kept totally in the dark until very last minute, about everything from text books to locations and it is just very befuddling. Now, I know that this is a fairly new school and that there will be kinks to work through; but Travis ECHS is already hitting quite a few bumps. Close Quote
