Summary

Canyon Vista Middle in Austin, TX, is a high-performing public school in the Round Rock Independent School District (Isd) serving 1,295 students in grades 6 through 8, and it consistently ranks among the top 2% of all Texas middle schools. This school stands out for its elite academic performance, particularly in mathematics, where 8th-grade math proficiency reaches 90.05% compared to the district average of 71% and the state average of 47.24%. Even more impressive, 99.33% of students taking Algebra I (an advanced course) are proficient, far exceeding the district's 69.61% and the state's 54.03%. Canyon Vista also maintains a near-zero dropout rate of 0.0% for four of the last five years, a stark contrast to nearby schools like Burnet Middle (4.2%) and Westview Middle (3.5%).

What makes Canyon Vista particularly noteworthy is its consistent success across all student subgroups, including Special Education students, where it ranks 20th in the state (99th percentile), and English Language Learners, where it ranks 58th (96th percentile). This level of support is exceptional and reflects a recent, highly effective programmatic change. However, parents should be aware of a common regional challenge: a significant dip in math proficiency from 6th to 7th grade, which drops from 80.76% to 62.5% at Canyon Vista. While this is a systemic issue across the area, Canyon Vista's 7th-grade score is still more than double the district average, indicating students are better prepared to handle the transition.

Interestingly, Canyon Vista achieves these top-tier results with a per-student spending of $7,693, the lowest among nearby schools, compared to $9,181 at Deerpark Middle and $9,944 at Noel Grisham Middle. This efficiency is remarkable, especially considering that Deerpark Middle, located just 1.82 miles away in the same district, is a 2-star school with a very different educational profile. For parents, Canyon Vista offers a proven track record of academic excellence, strong support for diverse learners, and efficient use of resources, making it a standout choice in the Austin area.

Open Quote It is a great school with terrific kids and supportive parents. The leadership is caring and sets a high standard which they fully expect students to reach - with the support they need. Their music and Fine Arts programs are amazing. Recent rankings disagree with the data here. As parents we received notice via enews that the school ranked #1 in the Austin area nd #6 in the state - beaten out only by schools that were magnets, charters etc - all with under three hundred students. This really is a 'world class school' like they say. I am proud to be a Mustang Close Quote
