Summary

Renner Middle in Plano, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 1,137 students in grades 6-8 as part of the highly-rated Plano Independent School District (Isd). While the school has a strong history and remains above average, its overall state ranking has declined over the past decade, suggesting it is facing new challenges.

Renner shows a fascinating split in its math program. It achieves exceptional results in advanced math, with nearly 97% of students proficient in Algebra I—far exceeding both state and district averages. However, the school struggles significantly with 7th-grade math, where only about 9% of students are proficient. This is a stark contrast to nearby Fowler Middle in Frisco Independent School District (Isd), where 88% of 7th graders are proficient in math, indicating this is a school-specific issue. Renner also excels at supporting Special Education students, ranking in the 88th percentile statewide, but it has critical gaps for other groups, including English Language Learners and students from low-income backgrounds, who rank in the bottom 20% of the state.

Compared to nearby schools, Renner is a solid but not top-tier option. It outperforms Frankford Middle (also in Plano ISD) in every subject, but it lags behind Robinson Middle (just 2.5 miles away) and the top-ranked Rice Middle. The school maintains a very low dropout rate, a positive sign for student engagement. For parents, Renner offers a strong advanced math track and excellent special education support, but the significant 7th-grade math dip and widening achievement gaps are important factors to investigate further.

Open Quote The only good thing about this school is 2 teachers and the location. my child attended 6th grade in 09-10. The teachers are rude and disrespectful. They are constantly yelling at the children and putting them down. The power math teacher was so bad, we had to have our child moved from her class immediately by the principal. The only way we were able to have our child removed from her class was because the teacher was caught on film yelling, pointing her finger, and shoving my son in the corner. She couldn't lie any more about how she was treating the kids because it was on film. Sad thing she is still employed with the school. The other math teacher had the nerve to threaten my child about his grade in math. I guess she was upset because he was accepted to a private school and she really did not like that. Band teachers embarrass the children and belittle them. One of the counselors does the same thing yell at the kids, parents or who ever she is talking to at that particular moment. It is very sad, the status the school has , it is not based on teachers AT ALL it is based on TAKS scores, PTA involvement. I would not recommend this school to anyone. If you can go private or magnet school. Close Quote

Open Quote I feel like this school could be better. I mean the teachers teach, but no one really listens. Kids are swearing left and right, and if you are a student, one wrong move and you could end up lying on the floor from a fight. Kid steal and bully and get away with it. I'm one of the lucky ones who manage to blend. Close Quote
