Summary

John B Connally High School in Austin, TX, serves 1,974 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Pflugerville Independent School District (Isd), and is characterized by persistent academic underperformance that has seen its statewide rank drop from the 39th percentile in 2016 to the 17th percentile in 2026, earning a 1-star rating for five consecutive years.

Academically, Connally struggles significantly compared to nearby schools. On STAAR End-of-Course exams, only 10.32% of students were proficient in Algebra I, less than half the rate at district peer Pflugerville High School (25.14%) and a fraction of the performance at nearby charter schools like Nyos Lamar Secondary (62.91%). In English I Reading, Connally's 32.02% proficiency rate is far below Pflugerville High's 48.9% and less than half the rate at McNeil High School (64.21%). The school's graduation rate of 82.0% is the lowest among comparable area high schools, over 12 points lower than Pflugerville High (94.9%), while its dropout rate of 4.0% is more than triple that of Pflugerville High (1.2%). Notably, Connally's per-student spending ($11,138) is higher than that of higher-performing schools like McNeil High ($9,050), suggesting funding is not the primary issue.

Despite these challenges, there are some bright spots. Connally shows relative strength in U.S. History, with 53.66% of students proficient, its highest rate across all subjects. Additionally, nearby charter schools like Idea Rundberg College Preparatory and Idea Pflugerville College Preparatory serve even higher percentages of students from low socio-economic backgrounds yet achieve dramatically better results—for example, Idea Rundberg's Biology proficiency rate of 84.62% nearly doubles Connally's 44.59%. This demonstrates that high poverty is not an insurmountable barrier to success and points to significant differences in school model and culture that could inform improvements at Connally.

Open Quote Connally could be a much better school. The kids are great and the glimpse they get of the world is so much more real than at a lot of other area schools. These kids are not going to have culture shock when they get into the "real" world because they're already in it. That's a good thing. There are also a lot of good people at the school; teachers, staff, and parents. My main complaint is that the communication is just really poor. Maybe the teachers are overwhelmed or maybe the systems they have to use are just poor. It's hard to get involved and it's hard to help your children. We also recently lost a great athletic director and a great principal and sadly, their replacements are not so much so. They show a lot of favoritism of certain kids or parents or groups. In a diverse school like Connally where there are a lot of kids who aren't probably getting the attention they deserve at home, the leaders should be more sensitive, neutral and fair.
