Summary

H C Carleston Elementary is a PK-4 school in Pearland, TX, serving 714 students within the highly-rated Pearland Independent School District (Isd). The school stands out for its high level of economic disadvantage, with about 67% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch—a rate dramatically higher than nearby schools like Silvercrest Elementary (11.65%) or Shadycrest Elementary (23.05%). Academically, Carleston has shown significant volatility, ranking in the 48th percentile (2 stars) in the most recent data, a steep drop from the 72nd percentile the year prior. This places it as one of the lower-performing schools in its immediate cluster, consistently underperforming the district average in every tested subject and grade level.

One of the most interesting findings is the school's remarkable performance in the 2024-2025 school year, when it achieved its highest recent ranking (72nd percentile) and saw exceptional success with its most vulnerable subgroups. During that year, the school ranked in the 85th percentile for both Hispanic Students and Low Socio-Economic Status Students, as well as for English Language Learners. This suggests that the school's strategies that year were highly effective at closing achievement gaps. However, this success was not sustained, as the school fell back to the 43rd percentile for low-SES students in the following year. Understanding what changed between these two years—whether it was a change in curriculum, leadership, or student cohort—would be critical for the school's improvement plan.

Despite these challenges, Carleston has some bright spots. The school appears to have a strong program for its Gifted and Talented students, ranking in the 90th percentile in 2022-2023. Additionally, the district allocates more resources to Carleston, spending $10,520 per student compared to the district average and nearby schools like Silverlake Elementary ($9,265). This suggests the district is investing additional resources to address the challenges associated with its high-poverty student population. The school's proximity to high-performing schools like Silvercrest (ranked #18 in Texas, just 3.45 miles away) highlights a stark contrast in educational outcomes that is almost certainly tied to the socioeconomic differences in their respective attendance zones.

Open Quote Not good. We enrolled two children this year (2018-2019) and are de-enrolling at first possible opportunity. The art, music, and other extra-curricular activities involve just sitting in a labeled class, not actually doing anything. Recess is spent sitting in the hall. The teachers seem as if they have checked out, and the classes are undisciplined. Pick another school. Your student will NOT be challenged. Ours are bored to tears. Close Quote
