Summary

E A Lawhon Elementary in Pearland, TX, serves 816 students from Pre-K through 4th grade within the highly-rated Pearland Independent School District (Isd), a district that ranks in the 92nd percentile statewide. While Lawhon has historically been a solid, above-average school with a consistent 4-star rating, the most recent data shows a dip to a 3-star rating (68th percentile), breaking its long streak of strong performance. This decline is notable when compared to nearby district peers like Magnolia Elementary (92nd percentile), Challenger Elementary (93rd percentile), and Barbara Cockrell Elementary (89th percentile), all of which are trending upward or holding steady.

The most significant academic challenge at Lawhon is math proficiency, which is consistently below the district average. In the 2025-2026 school year, only 44.83% of 3rd graders and 54.14% of 4th graders were proficient in math, a stark contrast to Challenger Elementary, where 72.31% of 3rd graders and 71.13% of 4th graders were proficient. However, a bright spot is the school's exceptional performance with Spanish-language STAAR test takers: 100% of 4th graders taking the Reading STAAR in Spanish were proficient, dramatically exceeding district and state averages. This suggests a highly effective bilingual program that successfully supports Spanish-speaking students.

Another concerning trend is the sharp decline in support for key student subgroups. Between 2023-2024 and 2025-2026, the school's effectiveness with African American students dropped from the 94th to the 51st percentile, and with low socio-economic status students from the 86th to the 66th percentile. This systemic issue warrants urgent investigation. Despite these challenges, Lawhon remains a strong school relative to its broader geographic area, outperforming out-of-district schools like Frost Elementary and Iltexas Houston Orem Elementary, which serve higher poverty populations. The school's per-student spending ($9,826) is competitive with peers, indicating the performance gap is likely tied to instructional strategies or school culture rather than funding.

Open Quote This past 2 years (2017-2018) my son was on Kindergarten and First grade respectively, and both years he had wonderful teachers and made amazing progress. He is in the Dual Language program and he is a fluent reader both in English and Spanish. The teachers were committed and very professional. I’m proud that he is in Lawhon. I am glad to see the School ranking went up this year. Hope they keep up the great work. Close Quote
