Summary

Cody Elementary is a public elementary school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 544 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Northside Independent School District (Isd). The school has seen a concerning decline in its academic performance over the years, dropping from a 4-star rating in 2015-2016 to a 1-star rating in 2024-2025.

Cody Elementary's test scores consistently lag behind the district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 48.33% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 50.71% for the district and 52.02% for the state. The performance gap is even more pronounced in 4th-grade Reading, where Cody Elementary scored 25.68% proficient or better, compared to 49.99% for the district and 53.73% for the state. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with some groups, such as Hispanic and African American students, performing much worse than their peers.

While Cody Elementary's spending per student has increased over the years, this additional funding does not seem to have translated into improved academic outcomes. In comparison, nearby schools within the Northside Independent School District, such as Hatchett Elementary, Adams Hill Elementary, and Michael Elementary, tend to have higher test scores, better student group performance, and lower free and reduced lunch rates compared to Cody Elementary. By closely examining the factors contributing to Cody Elementary's challenges and implementing targeted interventions, the school has the potential to improve its academic outcomes and provide a better educational experience for its students.

Open Quote My son transferred to Cody Elementary School for first grade since we relocated due to military move. My son has excelled in both reading and Math since he moved here. The Special Education class for children with autism is excellent; the Special Ed Teacher was awarded Teacher of the Year. His class has 7 students and my son is integrated in other classes for core curriculum (English, Science, Math, Social Studies) and gets one-on-one attention for Speech Therapy and PE with the Special Ed Teachers. He loves going to this school and we decided to keep him at Cody for the rest of the school year as it isn't as big as the newer schools in NISD even though it's a bit farther from our home. My son is also reading and spelling just like the kids in the regular classes and gets plenty of support from all his teachers. Close Quote
