Summary

North Bend Elementary in Humble Independent School District (Isd) is a PK-5 school serving 768 students in a high-poverty area, where over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and it has recently achieved a dramatic turnaround from the bottom 20% of Texas elementary schools to a 3-star rating at the 54th percentile statewide.

The most remarkable story at North Bend is its meteoric rise in academic performance. After ranking in the 18th percentile just two years ago, the school jumped to the 54th percentile in the 2025-2026 school year—a 36-percentile-point gain that sets it apart from nearby schools. For example, Ridge Creek Elementary, Lakeland Elementary, and River Pines Elementary remain in the bottom 20th percentile, while Jack M Fields Senior Elementary has struggled to recover. North Bend now ranks in the 71st percentile for serving low socio-economic status students—a 4-star rating—proving that high poverty does not have to mean low achievement. The school also excels in 4th grade math, with 62.65% of students proficient compared to the district average of 49.28%, outperforming most nearby schools except the high-performing Fall Creek Elementary (65.38%).

Despite these gains, North Bend faces persistent challenges. Fifth grade science remains a critical weakness, with only 4-5% of students proficient in recent years—the lowest among nearby schools, including Francis Elementary in Aldine Independent School District (Isd). Additionally, while Spanish-speaking students perform well in 4th grade math (40% proficient vs. 29% statewide), only 21.43% are proficient in 3rd grade reading, indicating a need for stronger early literacy support. The school benefits from a favorable 11:1 student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending ($13,281), suggesting that recent improvements stem from better instructional strategies and school culture rather than just resources. This turnaround is especially notable when compared to Ignite Community School - Humble, a charter with a much higher ratio (18.4:1) that achieves strong results through efficiency.

Open Quote The dedication of the teaching staff, administration, and support staff has made a remarkable difference in the lives of children whose parents have much less resources. This school shows that their is truth in the statement, "people make the difference". Close Quote

Open Quote This school is horrible. The front office administration needs training in empathy, listening skills and any other social training available. They have a very brash demeanor when dealing with parents and kids. As far as teachers go I can only speak from my experience with one ( I pulled my daughter out of northbelt the first opportunity I had) My daughters 2nd grade teacher would allow her students to write in pen, crayon, markers for daily assignments and homework. She allowed her handwriting to be outside of the lines and in random spots on the page (after expressing my concerns to her she said she was just satisfied that they actually did their work) Homework was not mandatory and schoolwork and homework turned in would be turned back to parents without any grades marked on them or without corrections made. she said she didn't want to discourage students) I never knew how well my daughter was doing and as a parent grades is a way to keep track of any needed improvement. Communication between teachers and parents is horrible. Parents go on the assumption that since there are no grades or any tracking of grades than their child is doing ok. I must also note that this teacher was teacher of the year 2 years in a row. Which says a lot about this school and the rest of the teachers. My daughter left that school with horrible study habits and knowing less than when she started. If you want to avoid a headache pray that your child is not zoned to this school. The level of expectations for the students is extremely low. In fact in 2012 I received a letter from the district that since Northbelt did not meet the states expectation when testing their students that parents have an option of sending their students to a different school. It's only a matter of time before this school is closed down. Close Quote
