Summary

Hobby Elementary is a PK-5 campus in the Houston Independent School District (Isd) serving 447 students in a high-poverty area, where 97% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school’s most defining story is its dramatic recovery: after ranking in the bottom 10% of Texas elementary schools for years, Hobby has climbed from the 5th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 24th percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 1-star rating. This upward trajectory sets it apart from nearby schools like Reagan K-8 Educational Center (16th percentile) and Montgomery Elementary (39th percentile), which have not shown similar rapid improvement. While higher-performing peers like Hines-Caldwell (78th percentile) and Windsor Village Elementary (71st percentile) demonstrate that high poverty doesn’t mean low performance, Hobby’s rate of positive change is unique in the area.

A standout strength is 5th-grade mathematics, where Hobby consistently outperforms both the district and state averages. In 2025-2026, 51.47% of 5th graders were proficient in math, exceeding the HISD average of 49.58% and the state average of 47.38%. This “5th-grade effect” suggests a targeted instructional strategy or team, though it doesn’t extend to 5th-grade science, where the school lags behind. Another bright spot is performance on Spanish-language STAAR tests: 3rd-grade Spanish math (37.5% proficient) and reading (30% proficient) both beat state averages, indicating effective bilingual programs. However, English-language scores remain below district and state levels, pointing to a need for better transfer of skills between languages.

Despite higher per-student spending ($9,972) and a low student-teacher ratio (13.1) compared to schools like Red Elementary and Petersen Elementary, Hobby’s overall academic outcomes are still catching up. The school shows volatility in serving special education students, dropping from the 66th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 8th percentile in 2025-2026. Historically, it has also struggled with its “At Risk” and “Gifted and Talented” subgroups. For parents, Hobby is a school on the rise with clear pockets of excellence, especially in 5th-grade math and Spanish-language instruction, but it still has work to do to ensure consistent support for all students.

Open Quote Do not send your child to this school it is terrible, their customer service is one of the worst I have ever experienced. The front office administrators are rude, the principle doesn't care what goes on, and the teachers are young and unprofessional. The teachers never know what is going on in their classroom, if something happens a fight or something serious they don't know what happened either not enough training to deal with children or to many kids in the classroom. I have had a teacher argue with me because I knew the policy of the school and she wanted me to do something else outside of policy and I refused. Close Quote
