Summary

Herod Elementary in Houston, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 682 students in grades PK-5 within the Houston Independent School District (Isd), located in the 77096 zip code. This school stands out as a stable, above-average option in a neighborhood with wide performance disparities, consistently earning a 3-star rating from Schooldigger over the past five years. Its state ranking percentile has shown a promising recovery, improving from a low of the 57th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 64th percentile for the 2025-2026 school year, supported by rising test scores in 4th and 5th-grade Reading and Mathematics that now exceed both district and state averages.

What truly differentiates Herod from its nearby peers is its unique economic profile. With 58.8% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, Herod serves a more economically diverse community compared to neighboring schools like Braeburn Elementary and McNamara Elementary, which have poverty rates between 96% and 99%. This places Herod in a middle tier between high-performing, lower-poverty schools like Lovett Elementary (40.4% poverty) and Parker Elementary (41.3% poverty), and struggling, high-poverty schools. For families seeking a solid, less intensely competitive environment than Lovett or Parker, Herod offers a compelling "Goldilocks" option.

Herod has demonstrated notable improvements in serving its diverse student body. The school's performance with economically disadvantaged students has seen a dramatic turnaround, jumping from the 16th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 63rd percentile by 2025-2026, suggesting effective targeted interventions. However, the school faces challenges with its English Language Learners, who have historically struggled but have improved to the 67th percentile. An interesting anomaly is the school's performance on STAAR Spanish exams, where 4th graders scored 50% proficient in Reading—well above district and state averages—but 0% in Mathematics, possibly due to a small number of test-takers. Overall, Herod is an improving school that provides a stable, above-average education in a diverse neighborhood.

Open Quote Herod is a wonderful elementary school with dedicated teachers and staff that strive to create a well-rounded, creative child. It is a Vangard 'Gifted" Magnet. It is also the home of a great Dual Language curriculum which serves students from K-5th. We started 2013 with 825 students and interest in the school in increasing all the time. Our student population is very international and diverse, just as the city of Houston is. The children are taught to be respectful of each other and learning and trying our best is the focus for each child. We are fortunate that our principal wisely chose to keep all of our specialist classes. We still have P.E., Library, Music, Art and Mind Masters (a class only taught at Herod). Many schools had to cut programs such as these, but Herod was able to keep them and their wonderful staff. Children in the Vangard curriculum are challenged by the curriculum. From Kindergarten on, children are required to give oral presentations of their projects, which helps them with confidence and public speaking. The school also offers a PTO-run Enrichment program and a school operated Extended Day until 5:30 p.m. Close Quote

Open Quote Herod is an excellent vanguard school. The MSA review said it is exemplary in the way the teachers team teach. They communicate with each other about how best to plan there curriculum. This does not happen at a lot of other vanguard schools in town. They have a specific reading program that holds the interest of gifted readers more so than the accelerated reader program at most schools. I have not heard a parent of a student there speak of a single bad teacher. We love our son's teacher- we get daily feedback about his progress!! We have friends who had their 2 kids in a private school but enrolled at Herod this year- they're much happier! Herod has excellent after school programs- enrichment class offerings are as good or better than any other area school. This allows your kids to have fun/learn after school and bond with friends who have the same interests and YOU don't have to pick them up and run across town and pay twice as much! We have friends whose kids are in the dual language program which sounds equally strong. Go into the schools, ask a lot of questions, talk to parents of students who attend. That's how you REALLY find out what's going on in a school and what kind of experience you child really will have there. Close Quote
