Summary

Debakey H S For Health Prof is a magnet high school located in the Texas Medical Center area of Houston, serving 929 students in grades 9 through 12 as part of the Houston Independent School District (Isd).

This school is an academic powerhouse, consistently ranking in the top 20 high schools in Texas and achieving a 99th percentile statewide rank. Its test scores are near-universal, with proficiency rates of 98% in Biology, 97% in English, and 99% in U.S. History. This stands in stark contrast to nearby Lamar High School, where proficiency rates range from 32% to 77%. Even other high-performing magnets like Energy Institute High School show proficiency rates 10-15 percentage points lower. The school also maintains a near-zero dropout rate, compared to the district average of 3.8%.

What truly sets Debakey apart is its ability to achieve top-tier results for every student subgroup, ranking in the 99th percentile for Male, Female, Hispanic, African American, and White students. Its support for Special Education students is exceptional, ranking 9th in the state. The only area for potential growth is in serving its Gifted and Talented students, where it ranks in the 70th percentile. This suggests that while the school excels at elevating all students to high proficiency, it may not provide the same level of advanced enrichment for its most academically elite students compared to other top-tier schools.
