Summary

Fonville Middle in Houston, TX, serves 583 students in grades 6-8 within the Houston Independent School District (Isd), and is located in a high-poverty area where over 95% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Fonville Middle is a compelling turnaround story, showing dramatic improvement from the 8th percentile statewide in 2022-2023 to the 39th percentile in 2025-2026. Its standout strength is advanced mathematics: 82.09% of students taking Algebra I were proficient, far exceeding the district (57.63%) and state (54.03%) averages. The school also excels with specific student groups, ranking in the 67th percentile for English Language Learners and the 60th percentile for low-income students. Compared to nearby Henry Middle, which ranks in the 12th percentile, Fonville is clearly the stronger choice, especially in 8th-grade math (52.85% vs. 30.15%). While Burbank Middle has a higher overall rank (49th percentile), Fonville’s Algebra I proficiency (82.09%) actually surpasses Burbank’s (77.38%), highlighting its unique advanced math program.

Despite these strengths, Fonville faces challenges. Social Studies is a persistent weakness, with only 13.4% of 8th graders proficient in 2025-2026, compared to the state average of 31.69%. Additionally, while 8th-grade math proficiency is high (52.85%), 7th-grade math proficiency is very low (14.71%), likely because top math students take Algebra I in 8th grade. The school also operates efficiently, spending $9,974 per student—less than nearby schools like H S Ahead Academy ($14,020) or Williams Middle ($12,070)—yet achieving a stronger upward trajectory. Overall, Fonville is a rising star in a challenged area, demonstrating significant progress through effective resource allocation and targeted instruction.

Open Quote This is a pretty good school, but the only problem is the 7th graders because they're the ones that makes the school look bad, they would always talk bad and fight. The only good grades are 6th and 8th graders, the test scores are also bad so I wish we change it Close Quote

Open Quote Worst school I've ever taught at. Extremely high turn over rate. Huge discipline problems. I would leave the teaching profession before I'd go back there. Close Quote
