Summary

Northside High School in Houston, TX, serves 1,058 students in grades 9-12 within the Houston Independent School District (Isd), and is located in a neighborhood where over 95% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The most striking news is a dramatic turnaround: after years of struggling in the bottom 20th percentile of Texas high schools, Northside jumped to the 53rd percentile in the 2025-2026 school year, earning a 3-star rating. This is a sharp contrast to nearby schools like Heights High School, which has remained stable in the 60th-70th percentile, and Wheatley High School, which continues to struggle in the 40th percentile. While elite magnets like Carnegie Vanguard High School and Kinder H S For Performing And Visual Arts consistently rank in the 99th percentile, Northside’s rapid improvement is unprecedented for a school with its demographics.

Northside stands out for its exceptional support of Special Education students, ranking in the 89th percentile statewide for this group—the school’s highest rating for any subgroup. It also excels in Algebra I, with a 70.21% proficiency rate that surpasses both the district average (57.63%) and Heights High School (42.06%). However, the improvement is uneven: English I and II reading scores remain below district and state averages, suggesting literacy is a key area for growth. Compared to nearby alternatives like Texans Can Academy - Houston North, which has a 2.2% graduation rate, Northside’s 83.5% graduation rate and 4.4% dropout rate represent a significantly more stable pathway for students in the area.

This “Northside Miracle” is promising but fragile, as it relies on a single year of data after years of stagnation. The school’s per-student spending ($10,307) is moderate compared to peers like Middle College H S At Hcc Fraga ($15,764) and Wheatley High School ($13,476), yet it outperforms both, suggesting efficient resource use. For parents, Northside offers a beacon of hope in a challenging neighborhood, with strong math and special education programs, but families should watch for sustained progress in reading and overall consistency in the years ahead.

Open Quote In the last ten years, Davis HS alumni have attended and graduated from a wide array of colleges and universities from around the country including Princeton, Cornell, the University of Virginia, Columbia University, Kalamazoo College, Beloit College, Drexell, Boston University, Rice University, Texas A & M, the University of Texas, and many others.

This is a testament to the effectiveness of the educational program at Davis, helping students, most who are first generation college students, successfully navigate their college experience.

As a community member who volunteers with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, I would simply like to attest to the fact that the school has a strong pre-AP and AP program and that I would send my own children to Davis HS> Close Quote
