Summary

Askew Elementary in Houston, TX, is a PK-5 public school in the Houston Independent School District (Isd) serving 873 students in a predominantly low-income community, with 85.8% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school currently ranks in the 22nd percentile statewide (1-star rating), a significant decline from its peak in the 2020-2021 school year when it ranked in the 64th percentile (3 stars). This drop reflects challenges in recovering from pandemic-era learning disruptions, though there has been a slight stabilization in recent data.

One of the most striking findings is the stark contrast between Askew and its high-performing neighbors in the Spring Branch Independent School District (Isd). Schools just 1-2 miles away, such as Rummel Creek Elementary (99th percentile), Wilchester Elementary (100th percentile), and Frostwood Elementary (99th percentile), are among the best in Texas. Even within HISD, Askew lags behind Ashford Elementary (55th percentile) and Shadowbriar Elementary (50th percentile), despite serving similar student populations with high economic disadvantage rates. This creates an "opportunity gap" where a student living just blocks away may attend a top-performing school.

Despite these challenges, Askew has a notable bright spot: its Special Education program ranked in the 99th percentile statewide in 2023-2024, suggesting highly effective support for these students. However, the school's overall performance is uneven, with female students ranking in the 11th percentile compared to male students at the 38th percentile. Additionally, Askew's per-student spending ($9,856) is comparable to high-performing nearby schools, indicating that funding alone isn't the issue. The school's bilingual program also shows inconsistent results, with 5th-grade Spanish STAAR reading scores exceeding district and state averages, while 4th-grade scores were very low. For parents, Askew offers a dedicated special education program but faces significant academic challenges that require careful consideration.

Open Quote HORRIBLE SCHOOL. Need lessons on how to help children transition from home life to school life. They take recess and fun stuff away from our children when they cry during the first week of kindergarden. Have they ever thought that some children are terrified! I have also never heard of having to schedule a conference to discuss your child being hit in the face...What happened to ZERO TOLERANCE for bullying. This school is not a good choice for our children. Close Quote
