Summary

Woodway Elementary in Fort Worth, TX, is a PK-5 school serving 520 students within the Fort Worth Independent School District (Isd), operating in a high-poverty area where over 91% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has faced persistent academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Texas elementary schools over the past decade and earning a 0-star rating for three consecutive years, with only 22.22% of 5th graders proficient in Reading and a dramatic 16.87% proficient in Math in the 2025-2026 school year.

A critical concern is the "5th grade cliff" in math, where proficiency drops from 35.21% in 3rd grade to just 16.87% in 5th grade, a trend not seen at nearby schools like J T Stevens Elementary (26.32% in 5th grade) or Harmony Science Academy- Fort Worth (49.40% in 5th grade). This suggests a curriculum or instruction gap at that grade level. Additionally, the school struggles significantly with Special Education students (1st percentile) and male students (4th percentile), indicating that current strategies are not effectively reaching these groups.

Despite these challenges, Woodway has a notable bright spot in its bilingual program. In the 2024-2025 school year, 33.33% of 4th graders taking the Spanish Reading test were proficient, outperforming the district average (22.52%) and nearly matching the state average (33.91%). This success suggests a dedicated bilingual team that could serve as a model for other areas. While the school spends slightly above the state average per student ($10,704), its results lag behind schools like J T Stevens Elementary, which has a lower poverty rate (70.64%) and has improved from the 11th to the 45th percentile over three years, showing that effective strategies can make a difference even in similar communities.

Open Quote This school has lots of problems with bully's. The principle is not very strong, she is NOT capable of handling problem children. There are some strong teachers but they have to teach to the bottom third of their classes. Smart kids are left behind. The school is not strong in reading and there are no tutoring opportunities available to the kids. Money was spent on computer and science labs. While these things are nice, shouldn't they focus the money on teaching kids to read. Close Quote
