Summary

H B Gonzalez Elementary in San Antonio, TX, serves 434 students in grades PK-5 within the Edgewood Independent School District (Isd), a high-poverty area where over 97% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school has historically ranked in the bottom 2-3% of Texas elementary schools, though recent data shows a slight improvement to the 7th percentile. While nearby schools like L B Johnson Elementary (16th percentile) and Loma Park Elementary (13th percentile) also face challenges, H B Gonzalez consistently ranks lower, suggesting that school-level factors, not just district-wide issues, play a major role in outcomes.

The most striking finding is the school's highly effective bilingual program for 4th graders, which stands in stark contrast to its overall performance. In the 2025-2026 school year, 4th graders taking the Spanish STAAR achieved a 53.85% proficiency rate in Reading and a 61.54% rate in Mathematics—far exceeding both the district and state averages. This "4th Grade Bilingual Bump" is a hidden gem, but it doesn't carry over to 5th grade, where Spanish Math proficiency drops to 15.63%. Meanwhile, 3rd-grade English Reading proficiency is alarmingly low at 10%, and 5th-grade Science proficiency is the lowest in the peer group at just 4.62%, compared to 7.14% at L B Johnson and 9.8% at Loma Park.

Despite spending over $10,000 per student—comparable to other Edgewood schools and higher than the nearby charter Idea Monterrey Park Academy ($7,457)—H B Gonzalez's outcomes are the worst in its group, raising questions about resource allocation. An older data point shows that Gifted and Talented students once ranked in the 60th percentile statewide, indicating that focused resources can yield strong results. For parents, this school offers a tale of two realities: a standout bilingual program for 4th graders, but significant struggles in early literacy, science, and sustaining success across grades.

Open Quote I’m very upset with the school organization this Monday 2019 on grandparents day they invited them to go have bf with the kids the school sent flyers say they would serve waffles and eggs omg and not at all they had a choice 1/4 of a waffle or a donut with only coffee really they could of asked for donations if they didn’t have funds but to lie to the parents just to have them come it’s really upsetting that’s why people stop showing up to meetings and second of all I don’t even know who the principal is never showed up to introduce himself or herself what a disappointment Close Quote
