Summary

Wilson & Young Medal Of Honor Middle is a public school in Odessa, TX, serving 1,227 students in grades 6-8 within the Ector County Independent School District (Isd), where about 70% of students come from low-income backgrounds. This school has achieved a remarkable turnaround over the past six years, climbing from the 9th percentile statewide to the 48th percentile, and it now stands as the top-performing traditional middle school in its district.

The school’s most impressive strength is its Algebra I program: over 97% of 8th graders passed the End-of-Course exam in 2025-2026, far exceeding the district average of 40.58% and the state average of 54.03%. This is a standout achievement compared to nearby schools like Nimitz Middle (70.77%) and even the charter Ector College Prep Success Academy (95.7%). However, general math proficiency for 6th and 7th graders hovers near state averages, suggesting the school excels at accelerating top students into advanced coursework. Social studies remains a weak point, with only 17.55% of 8th graders proficient, well below the state average of 31.69%. The school also maintains a very low dropout rate of 0.7%, compared to the district’s 2.0%.

While Wilson & Young outperforms all other Ector County ISD middle schools, it trails some schools in the neighboring Midland Independent School District (Isd), such as San Jacinto J H (44th percentile), which shows stronger results in 6th-grade reading (71.95%) and math (68.29%). Additionally, the school’s Gifted and Talented program ranks in the 18th percentile statewide, a notable drop from the prior year, indicating that while the school effectively raises achievement for many students, it may need to provide more enrichment for its highest achievers beyond the Algebra I track.

Open Quote Has really been surprising, this is my child's first year and is looking forward to next year. Some of the teachers have been great here, they really do appreciate your child and their hard work and effort. We were told oh don't send your child there. But my child has learned alot at Hood Jr. High, and I believe the parents who say don't go there doesn't really know the school or its great faculty. My child has straight A's and is in several clubs in the school. Parents have to get involved know your teachers go to the open houses see what your child is doing and what they do in school.
