Summary

C A Tatum Junior Elementary is a PK-5 public school in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, TX, serving 415 students as part of the Dallas Independent School District (Isd).

Tatum stands out for its exceptional performance in 5th-grade mathematics, where 72.73% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—a full 25 percentage points higher than both the district and state averages. This "5th-grade bounce" is unique to Tatum; nearby Edward Titche Elementary, for example, saw only 42.47% proficiency in the same subject. The school also excels in Spanish-language reading, consistently outperforming the state across all tested grades, with 5th graders scoring 63.16% proficient compared to the state's 34.82%. This suggests a strong bilingual program that builds a solid foundation for students. However, the school's overall ranking has been volatile, swinging from the 3rd percentile to the 58th percentile and back, indicating sensitivity to changes in student cohorts or staff. While Tatum invests heavily in smaller class sizes with a low student-teacher ratio of 14.9, its performance in 3rd and 4th grades often lags behind state averages, and 5th-grade science scores are alarmingly low at just 6.06% proficient—far below the state's 29.57% and neighboring Edward Titche Elementary's 35.71%.

Subgroup data reveals a clear strength for Hispanic students and English Language Learners, who earn 3-star ratings, while Gifted and Talented students and Special Education students struggle with 1-star ratings. This suggests the school effectively supports its core demographic but may lack resources for advanced learners or those with special needs. Compared to nearby schools like San Jacinto Elementary and Annie Webb Blanton Elementary, Tatum's Spanish reading scores are competitive, offering a unique advantage for families seeking strong bilingual education. Yet, the science gap remains a critical weakness that families should consider when evaluating readiness for middle school.

Open Quote My son is a 1st grade student at C. A. Tatum. He also attended kindergarten there. I must say that the first year went really well, but this year not so much. We have encountered quite a few problems & I am not sure if he will return next year. The staff is not so great and at times they seem like they just dont care as much as I feel they should. Parents if you have other options, use them. Close Quote
