Summary

Gilbert Cuellar Senior Elementary is a large PK-5 school in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, serving 715 students as part of the Dallas Independent School District (Isd), where over 98% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has achieved a remarkable turnaround, jumping from the 15th percentile statewide in 2023-2024 to the 80th percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 4-star rating. This makes it the highest-performing school in its immediate vicinity, far outpacing nearby schools like B H Macon Elementary (51st percentile) and Pleasant Grove Elementary (18th percentile), all of which serve similarly high-poverty populations.

The school excels with its core student population, ranking in the 95th percentile for low socioeconomic status students and the 94th percentile for African American students—both earning 5-star ratings. This represents a dramatic improvement from just two years prior, when these groups ranked in the 39th and 4th percentiles, respectively. The bilingual program is also a standout, with 5th-grade Spanish Reading proficiency at 69.57%, far exceeding the district average of 50.59% and the state average of 34.82%. Additionally, the school has consistently served its Special Education students well, earning a 4-star rating for three consecutive years.

However, the school struggles to challenge its highest-achieving students, with the Gifted and Talented subgroup ranking in the 28th percentile in 2025-2026. This suggests that the intense focus on lifting up struggling students may have come at the expense of pushing top performers. The school's per-student spending ($11,975) and student-teacher ratio (14.5) are comparable to nearby schools, indicating that the turnaround is driven by effective instructional strategies rather than additional resources. For parents considering this school, the data shows a dedicated staff that has achieved extraordinary results for most students, though families with advanced learners may want to inquire about enrichment opportunities.

Open Quote Where do I start, I went here ever since Pre-K. Gilbert Cuellar is an amazing school the teachers are nice, faculty is wonderful. Out of all the years i went there i never had any problems, personally my favorite years where 4th grade and 6th grade. It was great sometimes I wish I could relive those years again.
