Summary

Dallas Environmental Science Academy (DESA) is a public magnet middle school in the Dallas Independent School District (Isd), serving 431 students in grades 6-8 and consistently ranking among the top 4% of middle schools in Texas for over a decade.

DESA stands out as an academic powerhouse in West Dallas, where many nearby schools struggle. While West Dallas J H ranks in the 20th percentile and Raul Quintanilla Senior Middle Steam Academy in the 10th percentile, DESA achieves elite results with a student body where nearly 87% qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school's test scores dramatically outpace the district average—for example, 8th grade reading proficiency is 93.88% compared to the district's 55.48%, and Algebra I proficiency is 78.23% versus the district's 59.35%. DESA has also maintained a perfect 0.0% dropout rate for five consecutive years, a remarkable achievement compared to schools like Thomas J Rusk Middle (3.9%) and Uplift Heights Prep Middle (2.5%).

What makes DESA truly exceptional is its effectiveness with high-need student populations. The school ranks in the 99th percentile for low socioeconomic status students and English language learners, and an extraordinary 100th percentile for special education students (ranked #3 in the state). However, one interesting finding is that DESA's Gifted and Talented program ranks only in the 32nd percentile, suggesting the school excels at bringing struggling students to high levels but may not provide the same advanced enrichment for its highest achievers. Compared to William B Travis Vanguard Academy Of Academically Tag, another elite magnet just 3.6 miles away with a low poverty rate, DESA achieves its top-tier results under significantly more challenging conditions, making it a true engine of opportunity in its community.

Open Quote Be nice if the math teacher would actually teach instead of all the ONLINE activities. Before a student excels at any subject, they first have to be taught.
My sons grade has dropped from B to D since this school. Math teachers should be math teachers not someone you pulled from another subject to cover for the school year.
