Summary

Blazier Elementary in Austin, TX, is a large PK-6 school in the Austin Independent School District (Isd) serving 1,275 students from a predominantly low-to-moderate income community, where about 61% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Blazier stands out as an "island of excellence" in its immediate area, achieving far stronger academic results than nearby schools. While schools like Houston Elementary, Widen Elementary, Langford Elementary, and Perez Elementary consistently rank in the bottom 22% of Texas schools, Blazier ranks in the top 40% (3 stars). For example, in 3rd Grade Reading, Blazier scored 60.4% proficient compared to just 10.8% at Houston Elementary. The school also shows a clear strength in Mathematics, with 5th and 6th graders outperforming both district and state averages. Notably, Blazier achieves these results despite having a higher student-to-teacher ratio (13.5:1) and lower per-student spending ($10,709) than nearby AISD schools, suggesting efficient resource use.

However, Blazier's own trajectory shows a recent decline, dropping from the 77th percentile statewide in 2015-2016 to the 63rd percentile in 2025-2026. Its historically exceptional support for "At Risk" students, which once earned a 5-star rating, has softened. An interesting comparison is with Newton Collins Elementary in the Del Valle Independent School District (Isd), located just 2.27 miles away. Newton Collins has a similar poverty rate (67%) and overall ranking (57th percentile) but is a much smaller school (600 students). This suggests that Blazier's large size and district context may create headwinds preventing it from reaching a higher tier of performance, making its relative success even more impressive.

Open Quote I really like Blazier. Our 1st grader is gifted, has severe ADHD and is on the autism spectrum. AISD has been great in working with the school to address her needs. Of course I've also had to be in constant communication with the school and followed the processes for a district assessment so she can be placed in special services.

It's a high performing majority minority school that's much needed in Austin. Our daughter is mixed race so I'm glad she gets to be around peers that look like her. Close Quote
