Summary

Bowie High School in Arlington, TX, is a large comprehensive high school serving over 2,100 students in grades 9-12 within the Arlington Independent School District (Isd), where nearly 75% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

While Bowie has a relatively low student-to-teacher ratio and a stable graduation rate slightly above the district average, its academic performance has consistently lagged behind. The most significant challenge is a persistent weakness in Algebra I, with only 36.73% of students proficient, which is far below the state average and dramatically lower than nearby Mansfield Timberview High School (65.63%). This foundational math deficit likely impacts performance in other subjects. However, there are bright spots: the school is a top performer in the region for its English Language Learner (ELL) students, who rank in the 60th percentile statewide, and its English II Reading proficiency (48.42%) is essentially tied with the district average. In contrast, the school’s Gifted and Talented (GT) students rank in the 8th percentile, suggesting a need for more challenging coursework for high-achievers.

Compared to its immediate peers, Bowie sits in the middle. Seguin High School, with a similar demographic profile, consistently outperforms Bowie in overall state ranking and key subjects, while Sam Houston High School has significantly lower test scores and graduation rates. A stark contrast is Arlington Collegiate High School, which, despite a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students, ranks in the 96th percentile statewide, demonstrating that high poverty does not dictate low performance and highlighting that Bowie’s challenges are tied to its instructional model and academic culture.

Open Quote I am a student at Bowie High School, and unlike the one-star comment I actually like the school. Yes there are fights, but i doubt very seriously that you will find a school that doesn't have high school drama. As for the curriculum, its the best one you can have if you want your child to have a good education ,but don't want to pay for an high priced private school. I attend school there and I'm a ''B'' average AP student. please take it from me and enroll your kids here or at least walk around to feel the atmosphere

Open Quote While a very large school, the principal and her APs have things well in hand. Yes, there are kids who cause trouble, but what school doesn't have attention-seekers? Unlike the one-star comment here, there are several security guards on campus at all times and, most importantly, my kids feel safe there. One of the great things about James Bowie High School is that it has many clubs and civic-minded organizations that get kids involved and spur them on to good works, focusing on someone other than themselves. A TAKS Recognized school for 2009-2010 (only 2 high schools in AISD were awarded that), the high-level focus of most of the students far outshines the trouble-makers who seek the attention. I have full faith in this high school and its wonderful principal, and my kids are excelling there. Close Quote

Open Quote Fights, assaults at school and at sporting events. Only one police officer at school of over 3,000 students. The parents are not informed of the crime on school premises. I feel that safety and security are not top priorities at this school. Close Quote
