Summary

Mary Burks Marek Elementary is a solidly performing, 4-star public school in Pearland, TX, serving 762 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Alvin Independent School District (Isd).

Marek Elementary is a strong school, but it sits in a competitive neighborhood of even higher-performing schools. While Marek consistently ranks in the 80th-88th percentile statewide, nearby schools like Silvercrest Elementary (99th-100th percentile) and Silverlake Elementary (94th-97th percentile) in Pearland Independent School District (Isd), as well as Alvin ISD's Shirley Dill Brothers Elementary and Glenn York Elementary, achieve even higher rankings. A key differentiator is that Marek serves a more economically diverse student body, with about 45% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, compared to roughly 20% at its highest-performing neighbors. This context is important: despite this, Marek still earns a strong 4-star rating, which speaks to the effectiveness of its instruction.

One fascinating finding is a "tale of two math scores" in 5th grade. In 2024-2025, Marek's 5th graders scored below the state average on the standard math test (29.82% proficient), yet 5th graders taking an advanced 6th-grade math test scored an astonishing 93.44% proficient. This suggests the school is successfully accelerating high-achieving math students, but it also raises a question about support for the remaining students. On a positive note, Marek has shown strong recent improvement in supporting its most vulnerable students, with performance for "At Risk" and "Special Education" students jumping significantly in recent years. For parents, Marek offers a very good, diverse educational experience, though it is not the top-ranked option in its immediate area.
