Summary

Gene M Reed Elementary is a K-6 school in Allen, TX, serving 486 students as part of the highly-regarded Allen Independent School District (Isd). The school has experienced a notable decline in its state ranking over the past decade, dropping from a consistent 4-star rating to a 3-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year, placing it in the 55th percentile statewide.

Gene M Reed stands out from nearby schools due to its higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch (43.21%), which is more than double the rate at schools like Jenny Preston Elementary (9.37%) and Dr E T Boon Elementary (10.27%). This economic diversity correlates with a significant academic performance gap; for example, 6th-grade reading proficiency at Gene M Reed was 68.57%, compared to 93.2% at Jenny Preston and 87.85% at Beverly Cheatham Elementary. The school also has a lower student-teacher ratio (12.2:1) and higher spending per student ($11,597) than many of its higher-performing peers, suggesting resources are directed toward supporting a higher-needs population.

Despite these challenges, Gene M Reed shows strengths in specific areas, including effective programs for Gifted and Talented students and English Language Learners. However, performance for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds has been volatile. The school is not alone in its struggles; Alton Boyd Elementary, located nearby with a similar demographic profile, ranks even lower. In contrast, Bolin Elementary, with a more moderate socioeconomic profile, achieves excellent results, highlighting the strong link between economic factors and test scores in this area. Gene M Reed is a school in transition, working to translate its investments into improved outcomes for all students.

Open Quote My son is a new kindergartener here. I was unprepared at how prepared they are here in Allen ISD. My niece is a Junior at Allen HS and it's better run than the university I attended.... no joke. They are completely dialed in as far as organization, quality of education, technology, student culture, parent involvement....it was frankly a little overwhelming to have all the opportunities to get involved in our kids' educations.
Definitely a very, very good problem to have. Close Quote
