Summary

Somerset Academy Brooks is a large, alternative public charter school in San Antonio, TX, serving 1,227 students from Pre-K through 12th grade as part of the Somerset Academies Of Texas district. The school’s most notable strength is its high graduation rate, which has consistently remained above 91% for the past five years and reached 94.8% in the 2023-2024 school year—a standout metric that is 14.8 percentage points higher than the nearby Southwest Preparatory Southeast Campus (80.0%). However, this success in graduating students contrasts sharply with critically low academic performance on state assessments, particularly in mathematics, where proficiency rates range from a high of 35.87% in 5th grade to a low of just 2.44% in 8th grade.

While the school excels at getting students to graduation, the vast majority are not meeting grade-level standards in core subjects. For example, only 7.89% of 8th graders were proficient in Social Studies in the 2025-2026 school year. A relative bright spot is high school English Language Arts, where proficiency rates on End-of-Course exams (58.82% in English I and 59.81% in English II) are at or above state averages. This is a unique differentiator from the school’s own elementary and middle school reading scores, which are below state averages. The school also has a high student-to-teacher ratio of 22.4:1, significantly higher than all nearby comparable schools, which range from 7:1 to 18.1:1, likely contributing to challenges in providing individualized instruction.

Compared to Advanced Learning Academy, another alternative school in the San Antonio Independent School District (Isd), Somerset Academy Brooks underperforms in nearly every academic metric. For instance, in 5th-grade reading, Advanced Learning Academy had a 65.75% proficiency rate versus Somerset’s 55.91%, and in 8th-grade math, the gap is even wider at 28.17% versus 2.44%. Spending is not the issue, as Somerset spends $11,365 per student, which is in the middle of the pack compared to nearby schools. The school’s inconsistent performance across grades and subjects suggests a lack of a stable, vertically-aligned curriculum, pointing to instructional or administrative challenges that need urgent attention, especially in mathematics from 3rd grade onward.
