Summary

Amarillo Collegiate Academy is an alternative public school in Amarillo, TX, serving 464 students in grades K-12 as part of the Texas College Preparatory Academies district, which ranks in the 59th percentile statewide.

This school stands out for its exceptional high school performance, with near-perfect scores on key End-of-Course exams in the 2023-2024 school year—100% proficient in English II, 92.86% in English I, and 87.5% in Biology—dramatically outpacing both district and state averages. However, this strength contrasts sharply with struggles in elementary and middle school math, where only 25% of 4th graders and 30.77% of 3rd graders were proficient, well below state averages. The school also boasts a 100% graduation rate and a very low 0.5% dropout rate, far better than the nearby Youth Center Of High Plains, which had a 16.7% dropout rate. Compared to Wildorado School, Amarillo Collegiate Academy generally outperforms in high school subjects like Biology and English, though Wildorado shows stronger middle school math scores.

One notable concern is a dramatic decline in Algebra I proficiency, dropping from 85.71% in 2023-2024 to just 39.29% in 2025-2026, which may signal curriculum or staffing changes. Math performance across grades is inconsistent, with a "sawtooth" pattern—for instance, 6th graders achieved 57.89% proficiency in 2023-2024 while 4th graders hit only 25%. The school spends about $7,486 per student with a 16.4:1 student-teacher ratio, and only 25.86% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While high school science and English language arts are clear strengths, parents should investigate the math curriculum, especially in elementary and middle grades, to understand the school's uneven performance.

Open Quote My children have been attending this school since 2006. Prior to coming to this school, my children were constantly reprimanded for distracting the class. This made them feel like "bad kids", like they were nuisances. The problem really resided in the lack of ability in the trachers to educate my children at their pace. Instead, my children, who are all extremely advanced were expected to "sit still" and remain quiet, while the teachers conveyed concepts 7 hours per day, 5 days per week, that my children had mastered before entering into the Public School system. We had looked into private schools, but found them too expensive and unaffordable. Within days of enrolling my children at Vista Academy, their excitement about school and overall outlook toward education changed to that of something positive. They, for the first time in years, woke up happily anticipating going to class. They have since maintained this passion for learning and have picked up life skills never taught in public schools, like character traits such as, accountability, tolerence and the use of value based discretion. I recommend this school, its staff, and style of educating the individual, not the class room, to EVERY PARENT I MEET! I couldn't ask for more in a school. Where I used to spend my days concerned whether I'd be meeting the principle the next day, I now spend my days fully confident my children are receiving the BEST education available in Amarillo that doesn't come with a large fee for attendance.
