Summary

Southwest Public Schools College & Career Prep Academy in Houston, TX, serves 462 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Southwest Public Schools district, which ranks in the bottom 10% of Texas districts. This school has historically been low-performing, but recent data shows a promising turnaround, jumping to the 37th percentile statewide—its highest ranking ever. Over 90% of students are economically disadvantaged, and the school spends slightly above the state average per student.

What truly sets this school apart is its exceptional support for specific student groups. It ranks in the 87th percentile statewide for African American students, placing it in the top 13% of all Texas schools for this subgroup. Additionally, it has shown outstanding progress for Special Education students, jumping from the 30th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 79th percentile in 2025-2026. The school also consistently outperforms both its district and the state in Algebra I, with 71.29% of students proficient compared to 54.03% statewide. However, it struggles significantly in English I and II Reading, where proficiency rates are well below state averages, and its Gifted and Talented students rank in the 9th percentile.

Compared to nearby schools, Southwest Prep Academy is a study in contrasts. It is located near high-achieving schools like Challenge Early College High School (99th percentile) and Energized For Stem Academy High School (86th percentile), which demonstrate that high performance is possible with similar demographics. Yet, it also neighbors struggling schools like Liberty High School (21st percentile) and Wisdom High School (28th percentile), which have very low graduation rates. In this context, Southwest Prep Academy's 90.5% graduation rate and low dropout rate (1.6%) are impressive. The school appears more effective at career prep (graduation) than college prep (academic mastery), but its upward trajectory and targeted support for key student groups make it a school to watch.

Open Quote My daughter currently attends Empowerment and has experienced a large amount of racism from Hispanic students. Being that my daughter is African American which is only 2.5 of the schools population, she feels threatened and unsafe at this school. They have been many incidents that occurred that led her to feel extremely unsettled. In addition she gets the shorter end of the stick when it comes to academics. She was supposed to be taking dual credits and somehow was not given the schedule for the necessary classes nor did any of her African American associates. I do not recommend this school for any child that is not of the Hispanic race. The threat against black students that started on social media yesterday and is still in effect is more than enough to take my daughter out of this school. She can’t even report issues with other students without her being made out to be the aggressor. Close Quote
