Summary

Ps 253 is an exceptional elementary school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving 913 students in grades K-5. This school consistently ranks in the top 20% of New York elementary schools, earning a 4-star or 5-star rating from SchoolDigger, and outperforming the New York City Geographic District #21 and the state of New York in proficiency rates for English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

Ps 253's academic performance is particularly noteworthy, with 79.85% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA and 92.96% proficient in Math in the 2024-2025 school year. The school has also shown exceptional support for English Language Learners (ELL) and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranking in the top 5% and top 10% of New York elementary schools, respectively, in these subgroups. This commitment to equity and inclusion is further demonstrated by the school's ability to support the academic growth of various student subgroups, including female students, male students, Asian students, Hispanic students, white students, special education students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Ps 253's success can be attributed, in part, to its strategic resource allocation, including a relatively low student-teacher ratio ranging from 12.9 to 14.5 over the past few years, and an increase in per-student spending from $16,158 in 2020-2021 to $28,599 in 2023-2024. This investment in educational resources and small class sizes likely contributes to the school's strong academic performance and its ability to support the diverse needs of its student population. Compared to nearby schools like Ps 216 Arturo Toscanini and Ps 254 Dag Hammarskjold, Ps 253 stands out as a model of excellence in urban public education.

Open Quote My child is in Kindergarden at this school. I would say that the gem of this school is Ms Mastropierro. She is an AMAZING teacher, so experienced, caring and kind. The atmosphere that she creates in class makes the children love school and thrive. The parent-teacher coordinator Ms Gina is very approachable and friendly. The school is clean and it seems like the staff is kind, open, and friendly (with the exception of security guards who are often very rude) However, the reading requirements that are pushed and the amount of testing done in Kindergarden is INAPPROPRIATE for children of this age group. The constant testing creates unnecessary amount of stress for five year old children, especially for the English language learners that make up about 1/3 of our class. I also feel that not enough time is dedicated to the arts. Otherwise, its a very nice neighborhood school. Close Quote
