Academically, PS 189 has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools, with performance on state assessments generally below the district and state averages. For example, in 2024-2025, the percentage of students proficient or better in ELA ranged from 34.09% (3rd grade) to 77.08% (5th grade), compared to the district's 46.79%-53.56% and the state's 54.15%-56.61%. Open Quote Had to switch my child out of this school. Great principals, main person in front office is kinda rude, intimidating, and unwelcoming. Counselor intimidated my child. Some staff seem to not care for the students or the parents some will completely walk away, ignore you, or become rude with you. . Academically behind. Some do not watch children leaving they let everyone out all at once and it's hard to keep up with the children if they have gone home to their parents or if they are just left outside. Many times my child was out with his friends when they should have been inside the office waiting to be picked up. Bullying is apparent some kids have a potty mouth (parents need to cut that out of them).. Lots of homework which isn't good and bad. Outdated school for sure need more decor. Twice the juice and food in the morning was spoiled. Some teachers won't give recess or enough breakfast time. Some teachers will embarrass a child to make a point. Not good! I saw it walking by twice and my child experienced it as well. Close Quote
