Summary

Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is a public magnet high school serving 498 students in grades 9-12 in New York City's District #2. While the school has a specialized maritime-focused curriculum, its academic performance has been mixed, with lower proficiency rates on Regents exams compared to district and state averages.

The school's 4-year graduation rate has ranged from 80.3% to 90.2% in recent years, slightly below the district and state averages. Its dropout rate has been higher as well, ranging from 2.6% to 7.1%. Chronic absenteeism is a significant issue, with rates between 31.5% and 48.1%, much higher than comparison groups. Student performance also varies greatly by subgroup, with Millennium High School, a nearby top-ranked school, potentially drawing some of the highest-performing students away.

Despite the school's specialized curriculum and increased per-student spending, which has risen from $16,628 in 2020-2021 to $30,944 in 2023-2024, the data suggests Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is struggling to consistently improve academic outcomes, particularly for its most vulnerable student populations. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for the school to better serve its community and provide a high-quality education for all its students.

Open Quote Great principal and admin who are turning the school in an upwards direction academically, many wonderful teachers, with after school activities that are off the charts unusual and exciting--sailing, sea rowing, boat building, boat driving, scuba. Environmentally conscious too- with an organic garden. Especially good for kids with learning differences. Close Quote
