Open Quote Although MHS is challenging academically and with workload, the results are undeniably positive. My child, who I would characterize as a solid A student in Middle School, but just missed the SHSAT score for BTech, ended up receiving all 5s in her APs, and high 1400s in SATs, and will be attending to a top ranked university. I credit MHS for a large portion of that success. While at MHS, the academic process was grueling and emotional for my child, and I question the workload impact resulting in what I thought was unnecessary stress and, far too often, lack of sleep. To that end, I do think that the administration can do a lot more to help with grades (MHS seems to have grade deflation versus grade inflation) given this hard-core academic environment, and the price students pay for what seems, at times, an unfair (versus peers at other High Schools) grade result. I hope the administration eventually does more than its typical lip service to rewarding students with grades more respective of their work and effort. Yet, despite the grade situation, I have to admit that ultimately my child's strong standardized AP and SAT scores shined through, and that was with very little support from "paid-for tutoring" services. Those scores, combined with a respectable, though deflated GPA, were telling and were the primary drivers to my child's "wildest dreams" college acceptances. I am also extremely confident that my child is extremely well prepared to perform well in college. The workload and stress will definitely not be a problem. Also worth mentioning is that my child is an athlete. Plays 3 varsity sports. MHS is in the top PSAL's Division in almost all of the sports. I say this because I don't think MHS gets enough "word-of-mouth" credit for its athletics. In fact, we were initially directed to other public or private high schools because of my child's love and strength in athletics. Yet, despite what we heard from others re: athletics, MHS was chosen because of its academics, the cost (versus private) and the close walking distance to our apartment. However, it turned out that the strength and success of the athletics at MHS ended up exceeding that of the other public and private high schools under consideration. So happy we didn't spend the money, or give in to long commutes and potentially sub-par academics. In summary, the experience at MHS turned out great. Highly recommend for the hard-worker and even the athlete. I would not recommend however for a child who, though academically smart, is unlikely to be dedicated to keeping pace with the workload. While that probably goes for any high-academic High School in NYC, it certainly goes for MHS. Close Quote

Open Quote I concur 100 with review that begins "Tough but excellent school." I would add that the school would benefit from more fun and social activities (movie nights, dances, club sports, etc.) to balance the rigorous work load. Close Quote
