Open Quote While this is not an amazing school compared on a state or national level, it is when you compare it within the district. It is one of the smallest, if not the smallest public school in the city. It is in a renovated two-story estate home (cafeteria in the walkout basement, with 2 levels completely above ground, not sure if this qualifies as a 3 story), without an elevator making it inaccessible to the handicapped. There is no gymnasium either and gym class takes place outside in fair weather or in the cafeteria in inclement weather.
As of 2014 it is K-5 with two classes per grade. As of 2014 there are two security guards that are outsourced through a security firm, one posted at each entrance/exit. The neighborhood is relatively quiet though as with almost every neighborhood in the city there are high-traffic drug areas within a few blocks. To my knowledge there has never been a security issue with the students, parents, or with trespassers.
The teachers and staff were hand-picked by the principal and they run a tight ship. Zero tolerance for violence and bullying. The teacher to student ratio is about 1 to 15. The teachers are very motivated and attentive to the students.
My only real criticism is that in previous years the communication between the school in general and parents was minimal, I was always seeking out fliers and new information instead of notices being sent home with updates, policies and news overall. The internal organization was also lacking. With the new principal this year, there seems to be a vast improvement in these two areas.
I would give it a 4.5 rating for Paterson but since this is an overall rating I give it a middle of the road 3/5 stars.
I also want to note that this school is located on North 5th, not the above listed address. Close Quote
