Summary

Elms Elementary School is a public elementary school in Jackson Township School District, serving 721 students in grades PK-5. While the district is ranked 463 out of 609 in New Jersey, Elms Elementary has shown relatively strong academic performance, with higher proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the district and state averages.

One notable strength of Elms Elementary is its performance among the African American student subgroup, which ranked 14th out of 463 New Jersey elementary schools in 2022-2023. However, the school's overall statewide ranking has declined in recent years, from 357th in 2018-2019 to 719th in 2024-2025. When compared to nearby schools in the Jackson Township School District, Elms generally outperforms its peers, but some schools in the higher-ranked Freehold Township School District surpass Elms in academic proficiency.

One area of concern for Elms Elementary is its relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.9% to 20.1% over the past few years, which is higher than the state average. Additionally, the school has seen an increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 20.36% in 2022-2023 to 26.35% in 2023-2024, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students. The school should continue to focus on improving academic outcomes for all students while addressing these challenges.

Open Quote The education at Elms has deteriorated from the time it opened in 2004. We have seen 3 principals, most recently Mr. Baginski. He always walks with his hands in his pockets, head down, hides in the corner whenever there's a school function, rarely talks to parents, rarely have I seen any passion or enthusiasm from him towards the kids or the school. I'm very disappointed how the education has deteriorated. The teachers that my children have, rarely give out homework. There's no reinforcement of learning. There is a very small ratio of teachers that have over 5 years of professional education experience at Elms. They tend to hire newly college graduate teachers to teach our children. Probably a cost saving tactic to hire young teachers with no real professional experience and a young principal running the school. One teacher even goes to the extent of giving the children no homework if a football team wins. Forget about football and focus on making our children excel in their studies. I am extremely disappointed how this school has evolved. However, I will give credit to a small group of teachers and guidance counselor there that really do care for the well being of the children. They work tirelessly to see them succeed. My hats off to them for doing an exemplary job. I only wish the new teachers and Mr Baginski can learn from the experts on what true education is.

Unfortunately, my children will have the effects of their botched learning as they mature. Close Quote
