Summary

Douglas County West Elementary School is a public elementary school in Valley, Nebraska, serving 540 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Douglas County West Community Schools district, which is ranked 70 out of 115 districts in the state.

Douglas County West Elementary consistently performs above the Nebraska state average in NSCAS test scores for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 3rd-grade ELA proficiency rate was 61.67%, compared to the state average of 57.45%. However, the school has a higher chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 14.7% to 21.1% in recent years, which is an area of concern. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, between 30.21% and 32.78%, suggesting a larger proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

When compared to the nearby Elkhorn Public Schools district, Douglas County West Elementary lags behind in academic performance. In 2024-2025, the top-ranked Elkhorn elementary schools had 3rd-grade ELA proficiency rates over 80%, significantly higher than Douglas County West's 61.67%. This difference may be partly attributed to the higher percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds at Douglas County West. Despite these challenges, the school has maintained a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.9 to 14.1 in recent years, which may contribute to more personalized instruction.
