Summary

Martins Creek Elementary/Mid is a public school serving grades PK-8 in Murphy, North Carolina, with an enrollment of 190 students. The school is part of the Cherokee County Schools district, which is ranked 138 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Martins Creek Elementary/Mid has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking, ranging from 398 out of 1,502 schools in 2022-2023 to 979 out of 1,490 schools in 2024-2025. The school's performance on state assessments is mixed compared to the district and state averages, with lower proficiency rates in most subject areas, except for 3rd grade math and 4th grade reading. However, the school has shown some strengths, such as high proficiency rates in 5th grade science and 8th grade science. The school has a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 97.93% to 98.42% over the past few years.

Compared to nearby schools like Peachtree Elementary and Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle, Martins Creek Elementary/Mid's performance is generally lower, with these schools having higher statewide rankings and better student outcomes. However, Martins Creek Elementary/Mid outperforms some other nearby schools, such as Andrews Elementary, in certain subject areas and grade levels. The higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio at Martins Creek Elementary/Mid do not appear to be translating into consistently stronger academic outcomes, suggesting the need to examine other factors that may be influencing student learning.

Open Quote This is an amazing school with a strong focus in academics. My daughter attends and we both love the school. She is in Kindergarten and already reading at a 2nd grade level as is 25 of her classmates! A true gem in a rural area! Unfortunately our school district is pushing for consolidation of these community schools. Close Quote
