Summary

Las Estrellas Elementary is a public elementary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, serving 383 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Minneapolis Public School District, which is ranked 300 out of 446 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Las Estrellas Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Minnesota elementary schools, with a statewide ranking between 785-835 out of 858-872 schools over the past 10 years. Its performance on the MCA-III standardized tests is significantly below the state and district averages across all grades and subjects. The school has a high percentage of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with over 75% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and a high proportion of English Language Learners and students with special needs. Las Estrellas struggles to effectively serve its diverse student population, with the school's rankings for subgroups like Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds also in the bottom 10-20% of Minnesota elementary schools.

While the overall performance of Las Estrellas is concerning, the school's rankings for its African American and special education student subgroups are slightly better than its overall rankings, suggesting that the school may be doing a better job of serving these specific populations. However, Las Estrellas has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Minnesota elementary schools for the past 10 years, with no significant improvement in its academic performance or student outcomes. This indicates that the school may be struggling to implement effective strategies to address the needs of its student population. Nearby schools in the Minneapolis Public School District, such as Cityview Elementary, Marcy Elementary, and Webster Elementary, also perform poorly on standardized tests and have high percentages of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, suggesting that the challenges faced by Las Estrellas are not unique and may be systemic issues within the district.

Open Quote The principal lets the students do whatever they want and does not hold them accountable, even for very violent behavior. This used to be an amazing arts magnet school, but it's a shell of what it used to be. Close Quote
