Open Quote Pros: It's a really nice school overall. I like the diversity of the student body. I like the different programs they have and that it's a STEAM school. The parents are very involved, and I have really enjoyed getting to know the teachers.
Cons: I saw a previous comment regarding the principal and I am inclined to agree. She is a very-well educated woman, but she also seems to have her favorites. Favorite kids and favorite parents. She doesn't speak to everyone, she just looks at people and continues on her way. She oftentimes looks angry. I do not think this is how a principal should behave. I think she has the children's best interest at heart, but she just seems overly stern, even with the parents. As if the parents need her to tell them how to address their own children. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but over time, her attitude and demeanor has not improved.
My other issue with this school and all the Farmington schools really, is the lack of staff diversity. Here you have this school with kids of all colors: white, black, Asian, Hispanic, etc., but the teachers and administrative staff is 99.999% white. This upsets me so much. Any person who is an educator should understand that children need to see themselves represented in professional positions. If the little black, Asian, Hispanic kids never see an educator that looks like them, then there's less of a chance of them becoming educators. They have a black janitor, and he's great, super nice, but the kids of color shouldn't only see a black person in the position of a janitor; they should see them on every level. Even Novi has a black school principal now, I don't know what's wrong with Farmington, especially the elementary schools. They need to go out and recruit teachers of color. Women AND men. And I can't be convinced that these teachers don't exist or aren't qualified, because I know plenty. They are simply not being sought. The staff needs to reflect the student body. Diversity is imperative. When this school expands, the staff needs to be diversified. Of all the things at this school that I don't like, this bothers me the most, and it's the one thing that will cause me to remove my child from the school. I hope this is taken into consideration.
